Dirty Jobs (on the Discovery Channel) just aired an episode on Animal Rendering. You may be asking yourself, “Self? Why should you worry about animal rendering?” Well, I’ll tell you! Rendering means taking the meaty parts of an animal, grinding it to little bits, boiling it to release the oils and fats, drying it, and then shipping off the “powder” that’s left to various places to be used in various products.

The main products that use this powder, called Tallow, are soap and cosmetic companys. Scary, huh? What’s scarier than that? They also use this Tallow to make synthetic motor oil. How healthy can it possibly be to use products with Tallow in it, if they use that same substance to make motor oil?
